Planning imported windows and doors for an Australian home

Key design, compliance, measurement and installation questions to resolve before ordering custom windows and doors from overseas.

Windows and external doors affect weather resistance, energy performance, safety, security and the appearance of a home. Overseas manufacture can be considered, but the project team must specify the required performance and coordinate the units with the Australian building design and installation method.

01

Begin with a complete opening schedule

A schedule should identify every unit, location, size, operation, handing, glass and finish. Consistent tags between plans, elevations, drawings and packages reduce the risk of manufacturing the right product for the wrong opening.

  • Unique opening number
  • Structural opening width and height
  • Panel operation and handing
  • Frame, glass, screen and hardware requirements
02

Define project performance requirements

Requirements vary by building location and design. Wind exposure, water penetration, safety glazing, energy efficiency, bushfire conditions and other project criteria should be established by the responsible Australian design professionals before manufacture.

  • Site wind classification or design pressures
  • Glazing and energy schedule
  • Safety-glazing locations
  • Bushfire or acoustic requirements where applicable
03

Coordinate wall and drainage interfaces

A window is only one part of the weatherproofing system. Head, jamb, sill, flashing, cavity and drainage details must suit the actual wall construction and installation sequence.

  • Wall thickness and cladding system
  • Sill support and drainage path
  • Flashing and membrane interfaces
  • Fixing access and tolerances
04

Keep local responsibility clear

Product supply does not replace the responsibilities of the designer, builder, certifier or installer. Confirm who reviews documentation, verifies openings, installs units, completes perimeter sealing and provides any required evidence.

  • Design and specification approval
  • Opening verification
  • Local installation and waterproofing
  • Inspection and certification responsibilities

COMMON QUESTIONS

Quick answers.

Can a factory decide the required Australian window rating?+

The project team should provide the required performance criteria. The manufacturer can then confirm whether the proposed system can be supplied to that specification.

Should windows be ordered from architectural plans alone?+

Plans can support budgeting, but production should use a coordinated and approved schedule with verified opening and performance information.

Is local installation included?+

No. Site Ready Direct does not currently provide local installation services.
