Custom building-product measurement checklist

A practical pre-quotation and pre-production checklist for openings, levels, access, finishes and drawing records.
SHORT ANSWER

Measure more than one point, record whether surfaces are structural or finished, check level, plumb and square, photograph obstructions, label every opening and never release estimated dimensions for manufacture without explicit verification.

01

Measure the geometry

Custom products need the real shape of the opening or installation zone—not one nominal dimension.

  • Width at top, middle and bottom
  • Height at left, centre and right
  • Diagonals, level and plumb
  • Finished floor levels
02

Record interfaces

Show the surrounding construction and anything that affects operation or fixing.

  • Wall, post or substrate type
  • Skirtings, tiles and cladding
  • Handles, services and drainage
  • Swing or sliding clearance
03

Control the information

Use clear tags, dates, units and responsibility so estimates cannot be mistaken for verified production dimensions.

  • Unique product or opening ID
  • Millimetres unless stated otherwise
  • Measured-by and date fields
  • Revision and approval status

RELATED QUESTIONS

Quick answers.

Should I deduct installation clearance?+

Do not make an undocumented deduction. Provide measured conditions and agree the manufacturing and installation allowances for the chosen system.

Can Site Ready Direct verify my measurements remotely?+

Drawings and photos can be reviewed for obvious gaps, but the party supplying dimensions remains responsible unless another service is expressly agreed.
